College students' apartment broken into during break

Two roommates returned to their apartment about 11:08 p.m. April 8 in the 700 block of Christopher Drive in Wyomissing. The roommates, college students who were among four who live in the apartment, discovered several items were missing from the apartment. They had been gone during a school break. Wyomissing police are investigating but did not indicate when the burglary occurred.

Rings, cash stolen from West Reading home

A West Reading man called police about 1:15 p.m. Dec. 19 after he discovered someone had broken into his home in the 300 block of Summit Street within the past week. Whoever broke in stole a ring and some cash.

Money stolen from Wyomissing restaurant

A restaurant manager showed up for work about 5:51 a.m. Nov. 21 at the business in the 1700 block of State Hill Road in Wyomissing. Someone had smashed the office door and stolen money. Borough police did not specify how much money was stolen.

Burglary suspect caught in Wyomissing

A Wyomissing resident's boyfriend tried to break into the former's home about 5:08 a.m. May 1 in the first block of Wingert Road, but his plans went awry. Someone called police immediately and officers found the man, arm bleeding, and a broken bedroom window. He was taken to Reading Hospital then to police custody. Police charged the suspect, a 43-year-old Reading man, with simple assault, criminal attempt, criminal mischief and criminal trespassing. He was jailed in lieu of $15,000 bail.

Burglary reported in West Reading

West Reading police received a call about 4:57 p.m. March 25 to report that someone broke into a home in the 700 block of Reading Avenue in the borough. Police did not say if anything had been taken.

Reading man waives hearing in West Reading burglary

An alarm went off about 4:36 a.m. March 1 at a business in the 700 block of Penn Avenue in West Reading. Police discovered a burglary had taken place and arrested a suspect around the corner from the business. He had apparently broken into a building in the 700 block of Court Street as well. Police charged the suspect, a 24-year-old Reading man, with burglary, criminal trespassing, criminal mischief, theft and receiving stolen property in each of the break-ins, and jailed in lieu of $12,500 bail in each case. He waived his preliminary hearing March 14 and faces a possible trial.

Two burglaries reported in West Reading

Less than 12 hours apart, police in West Reading investigated two burglaries in the borough on Feb. 19.

  • The first was reported at 3:58 a.m. in the first block of South Third Avenue. Police identified a suspect and said they would file charges, but as of March 1 none had yet been filed.
  • The second break-in was reported at 1:02 p.m. in the 700 block of Court Street. A man's apartment had been burglarized.

Burglary suspect arrested in West Reading

A man kicked in a door to break into a home about 4:28 a.m. Dec. 4 in the 400 block of Franklin Street in West Reading. Police responded immediately and arrested the suspect, who was still inside the home. Nothing was taken, police said. The suspect, a 20-year-old Reading man, was charged with burglary, trespassing, prowling at night, harassment, disorderly conduct, public drunkenness and underage drinking. He was jailed in lieu of $3,000 bail.

Baltimore man faces charges in Berkshire Mall burglaries

Wyomissing police charged a 49-year-old Baltimore resident April 6 with four counts each of burglary and criminal trespass stemming from a string of break-ins the morning of March 7 at the Berkshire Mall, in the 1600 block of State Hill Road in the borough.

Three stores broken into in Berkshire Mall

An alarm went off about 8:14 a.m. March 7 at a Verizon store in the Berkshire Mall, in the 1600 block of State Hill Road in Wyomissing. Mall security guards discovered a rear door had been forced open and three other stores inside the mall burglarized.

Officer on bicycle patrol catches burglary suspect

A woman who lives in the 400 block of Penn Avenue in West Reading heard a loud bang at the rear of a nearby salon. She told a borough police officer who was on bicycle patrol. He spotted a hole in the glass of a door to the business and two other officers spotted a man whom the woman described as the suspect. Police arrested the suspect, a 47-year-old Reading resident, and charged him with burglary, theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief. He was jailed in lieu of $5,000 bail.

Burglary suspect waives her preliminary hearing

A 21-year-old Wyomissing woman faces a possible jury trial on allegations she stole electronics from a home in the borough. On Feb. 12 the man came to his home in the first block of Trebor Place and discovered his televisions and computer missing. He told police at the time he suspected his daughter was responsible.

The suspect had been wanted for failing to appear at a plea hearing in January on driving-under-the-influence charges stemming from a traffic stop in July 2009 in Spring Township. She waived her preliminary hearing March 11 on the burglary arrest. All the charges, including eight for conspiracy and one each for burglary, theft, trespassing and receiving stolen property, were held for court. She was jailed in lieu of $25,000 bail.

String of burglaries reported in West Reading

Penn Avenue, the commercial heart of West Reading, was an attractive draw for burglars in a February. For about the last two weeks of the month, and into March, the following break-ins were reported. Police did not indicate what, if anything, was stolen.

  • 8:36 a.m. Feb. 12: overnight burglary reported, 500 block of Penn Avenue;
  • 1:52 p.m. Feb. 12: 300 block;
  • 5:26 a.m. Feb. 21, 400 block;
  • 8:04 p.m. Feb. 26, 600 block;
  • 3:13 p.m. Feb. 27, 400 block; and
  • 8:50 a.m. March 2, 700 block.

West Reading business broken into

A witness called police about 5:26 a.m. Feb. 21 after seeing a broken window in the back of a business in the 400 block of Penn Avenue in West Reading. Borough police arrived but did not indicate if anything was stolen.

Several businesses broken into in Wyomissing

  • About 10:25 a.m. Feb. 21, Wyomissing police received a report of a burglary that had happened overnight at a business in the 1300 block of Penn Avenue. The burglar or burglars broke a side window to get in. Police did not indicate what, if anything, was stolen.
  • A Wyomissing police officer on patrol discovered a shattered window in the front door of a business about 11:33 p.m. Feb. 21 in the 1100 block of Penn Avenue in the borough. Though someone apparently entered the building, the owner said nothing appeared to be missing.
  • A short time later, a burglar or burglars were successful a few doors away. About 12:09 a.m. Feb. 22, an officer spotted broken glass by the rear door of a business also in the 1100 block of Penn Avenue. Cash was stolen but whoever broke in left behind “a fair amount of blood” as a result of breaking the window.

Man suspects daughter in theft of electronics

A Wyomissing resident came home for lunch shortly after noon Feb. 12 and discovered multiple televisions and a computer had been stolen from his house in the first block of Trebor Place. He told borough police he suspects his daughter is involved in the burglary.

West Reading man charged in burglary

A woman and her son heard a loud noise about 4 a.m. Dec. 4 while in their home in the 400 block of Pine Street in West Reading. They discovered cracks in the window of the back door, but no other evidence of a break-in. Police found a fingerprint and traced it to a 19-year-old borough resident, who told officers he had no recollection of visiting the home.

He was charged Dec. 22 with criminal mischief, prowling at night, attempted burglary and attempted trespassing and released on 5 percent of $10,000 bail.

Guns taken in West Reading burglary

A rifle and an unspecified number of handguns were reported stolen about 9:56 p.m. Dec. 18 from a home in the 200 block of Sycamore Road in West Reading.

Woman finds burglar in her home in Wyomissing

A Wyomissing resident woke up in the morning of Dec. 17 to find a stranger in the kitchen of her home in the first block of Park Road. Later that day she called police because she was too afraid to tell them at the time she made the discovery.

Two men arrested in West Reading burglary

On Thanksgiving morning, an alert neighbor called police when two men broke into a home in the 700 block of Wayne Avenue. Officers arrived within minutes of the 10:10 a.m. call, found the men inside the home and arrested them. 

One of the suspects, a 42-year-old Reading man, has prior convictions for theft, drug possession and assault. He and the other suspect, a 43-year-old Reading resident, were each charged with one count each of burglary, trespassing, theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief and four counts of criminal conspiracy. Both were jailed in lieu of $15,000 bail each.
